Understanding Breast Cancer


Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancers, which victimizes females in the world. It is also one of the most popular causes of deaths in the female population of the world.

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer may be defined as a cancer of the tissues of the breast. Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Not all breast cancers cause pain. Generally, women developing breast cancers does not experience any pain at its earlier stages. The same thing goes with other symptoms. There may be no symptoms in the earlier stage of cancer growth thus it cannot be detected. But, as the cancer grows inside the body, certain symptoms might begin to be visible and should be watched out for. Several of the symptoms the following:

  • Development of a lump or a thickening in or near the breast area or in the underarm area.
  • Changes in the size or shape of the breast.
  • The color and feel of the skin of the breast, nipple or areola may be visible. It may appear dimpled or scaly or others.
  • A discharge from the nipple.
  • Pain near or in the breast area.
  • Irregular appearance of one or both breasts.

Treatment Procedures

If you experience any of these symptoms, it will be best to consult your doctor as soon as possible. By consulting your doctor promptly, detection of the cancer, if existing, at an early stage when it is still curable is possible. Remember that the major reason breast cancer has a high mortality rate is that most breast cancers are detected only in its more advanced stage due partly to lack of pain and other more alarming symptoms.
